What size should an Australian passport photo be?

An Australian passport photo must be 35 x 45 mm in print (official spec allows 35-40 mm wide by 45-50 mm high), or 826 x 1062 pixels digitally at 600 DPI. The aspect ratio is 7:9 and the head height should be 71-80% of the image height (32-36 mm), which is the largest head size ratio of any major passport.

Can I wear glasses in my Australian passport photo?

No. Glasses are not allowed in Australian passport photos. Importantly, vision impairment alone is NOT an acceptable reason for a medical exception. Only non-vision medical conditions qualify for an exception, and a medical certificate or B-11 form must be submitted.

What background colour is required for an Australian passport photo?

Australian passport photos require a white background (#FFFFFF). Light grey (#F0F0F0 to #FAFAFA) is also acceptable as long as it contrasts with the subject's face. The background must be completely uniform with no patterns, gradients, or shadows.

Can I smile in my Australian passport photo?

No. Adults and children aged 3 and over must have a neutral expression with their mouth closed. Children under 3 may have a natural expression and their mouth may be open.

Can I wear jewellery in my Australian passport photo?

Jewellery and piercings are conditionally permitted but must not obscure any part of your face, especially your eyes, mouth, and nose. No reflections from jewellery or piercings are allowed in the photo.

Baby & Child Photos (Under 3 Years)

Natural expression is accepted and the mouth may be open. Eyes should be open. No other people, parents, or supporting hands may be visible in the photo. No toys are allowed. The child should look at the camera, but this is not strictly required.

The photo must have been taken within the last 6 months and must reflect the applicant's current appearance.

No Retouching
